From trade caravans to adventuring parties, many of Heckfire’s citizens have made their fortune dancing across the shifting dunes, seeing these lands not as an enemy, but a friend of peculiar ways. But even those who have come to treat this as their home hold no illusions; there are things in this place that no one can truly tame. Sitting around campfires, they tell the tales of one such creature that stalks the dunes, rising as the sky is set ablaze with the setting sun and wandering the desert in search of prey. They speak of how it strikes from the sands, the only hint of its presence being the sudden stinging which grows into sweating and stiffening limbs as the victim collapses. They tell of how they fled, for any that stopped, or tried to help fell victim to the same imperceptible demon. The only hint at what had done this being the shifting of sands below as their companions were dragged down into the darkness, never to be seen again.
